GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - After a 5-1 loss last Sunday, the Davenport men's ACHA Division I team was looking for a better showing against Aquinas College on Wednesday evening at Patterson Ice Center. Not only did they play better, but they won the rematch by a final score of 4-3 to improve to 2-1 this season. Each team scored in all three periods of this tight contest and no team led by more than one goal throughout the game.
Heath Drye opened the scoring on the power play for the Panthers at 2:10 of the first period with assists from
Taber Gutschick and
Peter Stojcevski. He took a shot from the right circle and the wrister beat the goaltender top shelf. The Saints answered at 8:19 as Christian Look scored the goal and Nicola Vogel added the assist.
The Saints took a 2-1 lead at 10:16 of the second period as Ryan Kleber's second goal of the season was unassisted. The Panthers tied it up at 14:13 as
Trent Benedict scored his first goal of the season with Stojcevski getting his second assist of the game. It was a 2-on-1 opportunity for the Panthers and Benedict kept the puck and fired high left corner into the net.
Brandon Rozema opened the scoring in the third period at 6:53 with a power play goal from Brendan McCatty and Alex Johnson. The Panthers rallied to score the last two goals and claim the victory.
Kristers Klavins lit the lamp at 15:13 on the power play just 15 seconds into the man advantage from
Robert McLaughlin and
Jonathan Dubbink. Drye then scored his second goal of the contest 58 seconds later from McLaughlin for the game winner. He drove the net towards the right post and used a back-handed shot between the five-hole.
Davenport excelled in the third period with a 13-5 edge in shots on goal. Both teams served over 30 penalty minutes for the game.
Sean Andrus got the start in net for Davenport and stopped 20 shots. His counterpart Randon Striplin accounted for 30 saves on the night.
Davenport is back on the ice on Thursday night when they travel to the University of Toledo for a 8:30 PM faceoff.
