GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The baseball team completed a weekend sweep of Lourdes in the opening fall weekend of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action on Sunday. DU won a pitcher's duel 1-0 in game one and then took care of business 6-1 in game two.
GAME 1
Krystien Johnson-Batillana took the mound and turned in the best start of his career going seven innings and allowing just two hits. He walked one and struck out five.
Jonathan Cheshire earned his first save this season going the final two frames with three strikeouts.
All of the offense happened in the bottom of the first as leadoff man Anthony DiPonio smoked a home run over the fence down the left field line. DiPonio finished the game with three of the team's seven hits.
Jeremy Vasquez collected a pair of hits in three at-bats. The Gray Wolves stranded four runners on base while DU left five on the bags.
GAME 2
The solid pitching continued in the nightcap as
Grant Steinborn got his first career start and went three innings giving up a run.
Andrew Click got the win in relief tossing five innings of one-hit ball. He walked one and fanned four.
Caleb Leach closed it out in the ninth facing four batters and struck out the side.
Frank Laranga threw in the fourth inning when Davenport scored three times to take a 4-1 lead and took the loss for Lourdes. All three runs were scored after two outs as
Jimmy Filipski walked and scored on a triple to left center by
Nolan Page. Luke Lalumia followed with a RBI single to left and then took two bases on a passed ball. DiPonio singled through the left side to increase the lead to 4-1.
Page doubled in the sixth to score Vasquez and Lalumia had another RBI single to conclude the scoring. Lalumia hit ninth in the lineup but went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Page finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI hitting eighth in the lineup.
