GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Grant Wolfram threw six innings and struck out 12 Lourdes hitters in a 9-1 win on Saturday as the baseball team opened their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference fall schedule. Wolfram scattered six hits and allowed one earned run which came in the sixth inning.
Matt York took the mound for Lourdes and was lifted in the fourth inning. The Gray Wolves defense let him down with two errors which led to all five runs he allowed going unearned. Davenport took advantage of a dropped bunt pop-up in foul territory in the third and scored four times in the fourth after a ball went through the wickets of Lourdes' second baseman.
Anthony DiPonio bunted foul on the drop and then singled up the middle. He later scored after he stole third and came home on a sacrifice fly by
Matt Hoge.
Jeremy Vasquez drove home the second run on a single through the left side. DiPonio then had an infield single for a RBI and Matt Crook singled home a run to right field. Hoge plated the fifth run on a single to right.
Davenport scored twice more in the fifth inning as
Brian Sobieski tripled to right scoring
Brandon Larkin-Guilfoyle and Vasquez laid down a squeeze bunt to score Sobieski.
Sobieski also doubled home a run in the sixth and Larkin-Guilfoyle doubled to the wall in right.
Pete Zeimis tossed three innings in relief and allowed just one hit with a walk and strikeout. Larkin-Guilfoyle, Sobieski and DiPonio each had two hits for Davenport. The teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
