Bellevue Wins Gut Wrenching 6-5 Game to force if necessary game

Davenport will face Bellevue again Friday at noon in winner-take-all to the NAIA World Series

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport baseball team was one strike away from advancing to the NAIA World Series on two different hitters in the bottom of the ninth on Thursday. No. 2 Bellevue battled in both at-bats to keep the game alive and then Colton Nash hit a 1-0 pitch just inside the bag at third for a double which allowed the tying run to score. The throw into third to try and get Joe Mancuso hit him while on the base and he got up and scored on the error to keep the Bruins' season alive and force the if-necessary game for the Grand Rapids Bracket.

Davenport carried a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth as Corey Sessions was hoping to close things out. Ross Feeley and Joe Moran grounded out to start the ninth. Derik Bontempo then singled on a 3-2 pitch into right field. Mancuso had an epic at-bat as he fell behind 0-2 in the count. Sessions thought he had the final out but just missed the outside corner on a 1-2 pitch. Mancuso then fouled off two pitches and on the 10th pitch of the at-bat drew a walk to move Bontempo into scoring position. Nash finished the game with his double.

Sessions was the tough luck loser on the mound (7-2) throwing 1.2 innings but allowed four hits after two very strong outings in the first two games of the tournament. Leland Tilley got the win (9-1) as he tossed one inning and struck out one while facing three batters.

Corey Murphy got the start for Davenport and pitched into the sixth. He left the game allowing seven hits and three earned runs. He gave up two runs in the first and one more in the fourth. Aaron Bain went five innings and yielded eight hits and five earned runs.

Bellevue got big contributions from the first four hitters in their lineup as they collected nine of the team's 15 hits. Trevor Jones, Feeley and Bontempo each had three hits for the Bruins. Zac Wilson, Travis Bolin, Matt Priebe, Brian Sobieski and Brent Showers each had a RBI for the Panthers. Connor Seymour went 2-for-5 with a run. Brandon Larkin-Guilfoyle went 2-for-4 with a run. Bolin and Showers each had a double for DU.
