DETROIT, Mich. – Playing their first ever NCAA DI opponent in their brief sic year history, the Davenport Softball team picked up a split against the University of Detroit on Wednesday afternoon. The host Titans took the opener 8-7 before the No. 22 ranked Panthers exploded for a 13-2 5-inning win in the nightcap. The split leaves Davenport at 22-6 on the season as they will return to WHAC play on Thursday at Concordia for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.

Game 1 – Detroit 8, Davenport 7

Plenty of hits turned into plenty of runs for both teams as the two combined for 15 runs on 19 hits including six doubles and five homeruns but it was a pair of late runs by Detroit that propelled them to the one-run win. Kyleigh Linebaugh suffered the loss in the circle for DU as the sophomore came on in relief of starter Emily Maves who went 5.0 innings while giving up six earned runs.

Davenport scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings but still trailed 6-3 after the Titans brought across four of their own in the third and two more in the fourth. DU then posted a 4-spot in the fifth to take a 7-6 lead as Paige Sant'Angelo connected on her first career grand slam scoring Alyssa Eastman, Katie Creighton and KC Dunne.

That lead would last until the bottom of the sixth when UofD plated a pair of runs and then held DU off the scoreboard in the seventh to escape with the win.

Amber Getty and Carli San Millan led DU with a pair of hits each while Karli Myers and Debra Burton each had a solo homerun.

Game 2 – Davenport 13, Detroit 2 (5)

Davenport got their split and first ever win against an NCAA DI program with an onslaught of runs highlighted by their second grand slam of the day to post a 13-2 victory.

The Panthers opened the game with a solo homerun by Amber Getty and then tacked on two more in the first inning to lead 3-0.  After an un-earned run in the third, the bats really came alive in the  fourth as DU plated five runs on six hits including a 2-run homer from Karli Myers and RBI singles from Sarah Schneidenbach and Paige Sant'Angelo.

The scoring continued in the fifth as DU put up five more including a grand slam from Ashleigh Blovsky and then the Panthers held the Titans scoreless to finish with the mercy run win.

Post-Game Notes

The pair of grand slams marked the second time DU has hit more than one in the same doubleheader…Paige Sant'Angelo now leads the team with 31 RBI and it is already a career high for a single season for the third baseman…Davenport has scored double-figure runs in eight games this season..The seven runs scored in a loss is the most this season
