DAVENPORT, Iowa –
Letesha Cannonier scored two goals in less than two minutes,
Lizzie Paul and
Abbey Tyson both added one and the Panthers defense held on against an aggressive Saint Ambrose to win the opening round of the NAIA National Championship on a sunny but cold afternoon at Brady Street Stadium. The Panthers will now pack their bags again and head to Orange Beach, Ala., where the remainder of the championship will be held from Dec. 2-7.
Although the Queen Bees came close to breaking the ice inside a crowded press box,
Laken Duchar-Clark was able to prevent the shot from happen by clearing the loose ball out of danger.
The Panthers broke away with a 2-0 lead midway through the first half.
Paige Eli made several touches from midfield before sending it to
Letesha Cannonier, who inside the goal box made two touches before sending the ball to the back of the net at 20:20. At the 18:50 mark, Paul took a free kick from 30 yards where she found Cannonier inside the goal box to put the finishing touch.
Paul would extend the lead to 3-0 at the 5:15 mark when she took a shot about 15 yards out from right side to find the left side of the net.
Saint Ambrose returned from the locker room with a lot of intensity, forcing the Panthers to play defense for a majority of the second half. The Queen Bees got on the board at 40:18, when a corner by Megan Theisen on the right side found the head of Erin Dierickx.
The Panthers regained the three-goal lead with 35:36 left when
Abbey Tyson used a penalty kick to beat Morgan Lynn on the left side in the net.
The Queen Bees would cut the lead in half again when Bre Choffin knocked a loose ball inside a crowded Davenport goal box into the back of the net.
Post-Match Notes
Davenport improves to 1-1 in the NAIA National Championship…DU also improves to 1-1 all-time against Saint Ambrose…The Panthers allowed their first goal since Oct. 26 against Northwestern Ohio in the regular-season, spanning up to three matches…With the win, the Panthers set a new program single-season record for wins with 18, breaking last year's record of 17.
