GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport Men's Lacrosse team had another successful season as they finished 14-6 and claimed their second straight CCLA North Division championship. The Panthers advanced to the national semifinals for the fourth consecutive year and will now turn their attention to the move to MCLA DI next season. Take a look back at the 2012 campaign.
Pre-Season Honors
Cody Cross, a second team All-American in 2011, was one of the key returners for the defending MCLA DII National Champions and Lacrosse Magazine selected the junior to their pre-season All-American team as a midfielder. Cross finished last season 36 goals, 15 assists and 38 ground balls.
Double-OT Thriller to Open Season
Davenport played their first three games on neutral surface in Pontiac as the Ultimate Soccer Complex and their first opponent was MCLA DI No. 6 Michigan State. DU used a late rally to tie the game in regulation but unfortunately did not come out with a win as they fell to the Spartans 13-12.
Strong CCLA Start
Davenport, the defending North Division champions in part of the CCLA DII, opened their season with two convincing wins against Northwood and Northern Michigan. DU outscored the two opponents 50-5 with a 27-1 win over Northwood and 23-4 victory over Northern.
St. Louis Trip
The Panthers entered the middle of the season with a four day trip to St. Louis to face three MCLA Top 16 teams. DU opened against rival St. Thomas who came in ranked No. 2, was the team's first opponent and the game lived up to the hype with the Tommies pulling out an 8-7 overtime thriller. DU also lost to North Dakota State before defeating host Missouri Baptist in the finale.
Statement vs. #2 Dayton
Coming off a 1-2 performance in St. Louis, the Panthers, who fell to No. 5 in the polls, played their home opener against No. 2 Dayton. Davenport struggled early but ended up cruising to an 11-7 win in which they scored four of the final five goals of the game to post the win.
Long Island Trip
Davenport continued its tough schedule as they traveled out east to face No. 7 Briarcliffe College and No. 13 SCAD. The Panthers, who defeated BC in last year's national quarterfinals 23-10, used a late goal to pick up an 8-7 win over the host Bulldogs before falling to the Bees 7-5 in the second game.
Upset Cross-Town Rival
Davenport upset #2 Grand Valley State at Lowell High School with a 7-6 overtime win. The Panthers jumped out to a 4-1 lead but the Lakers battle back and scored late in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime. In OT, the Lakers controlled the ball for most of the extra frame but with 14 second remaining
Jordan Richtsmeier netted a goal to win it for the Panthers. The loss was the first and only on the season for Grand Valley.
Undefeated League Play
Davenport finished CCLA Regular Season play with a perfect 6-0 record. Along with beating their three divisional opponents, the Panthers also defeated the three other division winners in Dayton, Grand Valley State, and Indiana Tech.
CCLA Tournament
After defeating Aquinas 12-5 in the first round of the CCLA Tournament, the Panthers were knocked out by Dayton in the Semifinals. Dayton jumped out to an early lead and the Panthers were never able to recover en route to a 9-17 loss. The 17 goals were the most allowed by Davenport this season.
National Tournament
Attempting to make a run at a second consecutive MCLA DII National Championship, the Panthers opened up the Tournament with a convincing 19-12 win over Concordia (Calif.). In the second round, Davenport survived against the third-seed Westminster Griffins 12-11 to advance to their fourth consecutive final four. In the semifinals, Davenport fell 11-15 to second-seed Grand Valley State.
