Panthers Split on Opening Day of the 2011 Season

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – After falling 2-1 in the seventh inning of the first game of the double header with the University of the Cumberlands, Davenport rebounded with a shutout 3-0 victory in game two. The Panthers start the season out 1-1 and will be back in action tomorrow against Union College for one seven inning game.

In game one, senior pitcher Tucker Gernhard (Stafford, Va.) started on the mound for the Panthers and only gave up two hits on the day pitching six complete innings. The Panthers scored their lone run in the fifth inning off aDerrick Gentile (Sturgis, Mich.) single to left, scoring Chris VanGessel (Grandville, Mich.)from second base.

Up 1-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Panther defense would have costly errors leading to the scoring of two runs by the University of the Cumberlands. Davenport would only account for four hits in the game compared to Cumberlands three. but DU would also have three errors along with leaving seven runners on base.

Drew Kennedy (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) would finish 2-3 from the plate with teammates Gentile and  VanGessel accounting for the other two hits in the game.

In game two Davenport would once again strike first on the scoreboard, but hold on for the 3-0 victory. Andy Westerburg (Spring Lake, Mich.) would get the start on the mound for the Panthers giving up just one hit in five complete innings of work.

Davenport would break the 0-0 game in the top of fourth inning with Matt McNeil (St. Clair Shores, Mich.)leading off with a single. Sophomore catcher Mike Allen (Midland, Mich.) would send a ball to the top of the fence for a RBI double to give DU the 1-0 lead.

Brian Spykerman (Anaheim, Calif.) would come up big with a two out single to right-center to score another Panther run and put DU up 2-0. Both teams would remain scoreless until the seventh inning when a Gentile double would score Brandon Bongard (Grand Rapids, Mich.) from first to extend DU's lead to three runs.

Solid relief pitching from Jarrett Luyk (Hudsonville, Mich.) and Colton Loomis (Alma, Mich.) would seal the 3-0 victory for the Panthers.

Davenport will be back in action in the state of Kentucky tomorrow when they take on Union College for one seven inning game. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm.
