TAYLOR, Mich. - Davenport picked up a 7-2 victory over Eastern Michigan on Friday night to begin their final weekend of play of the first semester. The win lifts the Panthers to 12-9 on the year and 10-1 in GLCHL action. The two teams play Saturday at 3:30 back at the Taylor Sports Plex.
The first period was more of a defensive battle between the two GLCHL rivals but Davenport finally struck the back of the net 11:39 in on a rebound goal from
Bo Jacobs on a shot put in by
Adam Gillikin and
Mason Bohlinger. The Jacobs goal would be the only offense of the first as DU went into the intermission leading 1-0.
The host Eagles came out hot in the second and scored the equalizer just 1:37 in but the Panthers came right back with three consecutive goals from the 11:56 mark on a power play goal by
Phil Wendecker to a delayed penalty goal from
Jeff Slusser with 8:29 remaining. Sandwiched in-between was an even strength goal from
Brock Carlston.
The final period saw the Eagles cut the margin to just two with a goal 3:02 in but the Panthers held tough on a few penalty kills and made the gap three again on a goal from
Mason Bohlinger with 5:15 remaining. The final two tallies of the night came from
Brock Carlston and
Blake Damerow. Picking up the assists on the final two were
Josh Munford, Wendecker and
Adam Gillikin. DU netminder
Matt Sekosan picked up his first ever win for the D1 program as he finished the night with 12 saves.
Davenport and Eastern Michigan wrap up their season series on Saturday at 3:30pm.
Post-Game Notes – Head Coach Phil Sweeney
On play of Matt Sekosan – “He played solid and the guys really wanted him to get a win…He had some really good saves when the team started to play lazy.”
On finishing off the first semester strong tomorrow – “It kind of stinks we have to stop playing we seem to be clicking right now. We have 60 more minutes to play to stay in first in the league standings and a good performance tomorrow will put us in a good position for the second half of the season.”
