GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The three-pointer again was DU's best friend today as they hit 12 long range shots as they cruised to a 90-75 win over visiting Madonna. The #2 ranked Lady Panthers are now 23-2 on the year and 9-1 in the WHAC. Combined with an Aquinas loss, DU now has a two-game lead with five remaining. Carrie Grubius (Kalamazoo, Mich.) got things started with back-to-back layups in the opening 30 seconds and then hit a 3-pointer on the next possesion that was quickly followed by a steal and bucket from Kristi Boehm (Kent City, Mich.) and layup from Jeannie Closson (Parchment, Mich.). The 10-0 run forced Madonna into a timeout with 17:14 remaining. MU did get to within seven but Davenport pushed the lead back to double digits numerous times throughout the opening half and after two straight long range shots from Karlee Despres with just under two minutes to play, DU had a 44-31 lead. Davenport would eventually take a 15-point lead into the locker room after racking up 50 points in the first twenty minutes as they shot 52% from the floor. Madonna was just as warm from the field as the Crusaders were 46% (11/24) while connecting on five long range shots. The first ten minutes of the second half was all Davenport as they went on a 28-11 run to take their largest lead of the game (32) at 78-56. The Panthers got points from eight different players during the run and they hit four more shots from behind the arc. The lead would remain in the high 20's until just under 5:00 to play when the Crusaders ended the game on a 15-4 run to bring the final score to 90-75. Both teams cooled off considerably in the 2nd half as DU finished 35/82 (42%) from the floor while Madonna was 25/57 (43%). DU never trailed in the game and forced Madonna into 22 turnovers while posting 24 assists on the 35 made shots. Carrie Grubius led all scorers with 18 points as Julie Janish (Whittemore, Mich.) chipped in with 11 and Kallie Benike (Campbellsport, Wis.) finished with 12. Brittany Lyman came off the bench for DU and posted seven points and six rebounds while dishing out two assists in only nine minutes of action. DU will now travel to Adrian on Wednesday to take on Siena Heights who will be coming off an upset win over #25 Aquinas today. Game time is set for 7:30 PM and it will be broadcast on the DAN. Post-Game Notes The win today lifts Davenport to 11-4 all-time against Madonna as the four losses have come by a combined 11 points...DU's all-time WHAC regular season record is now 57-9 as they will look for their fifth straight year of at least 10 wins on Wednesday at Siena Heights...The Panthers are now 23-2 all-time at the Student Center |
