GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenports D3 hockey team opens their season tonight against Marquette. Today, we are previewing this year's forwards. Davenport will be leaning on the experience of forwards Bryon Guerin, Zack Feher, Jordan Steger, and Garrett Russell to lead the Panthers offensive attack, with hopes of making another National Tournament run.
Head coach Chris Green had a busy off season reloading his offensive fire power as he lost five of his top seven scorers from last season. Green has brought in eight new forwards to add to six returning forwards from last season.
The line of Jordan Steger, Zack Feher, and Garrett Russell will look to pick up where they left off last season. The trio scored a combined 37 goals last season, 24 of which came in the last 20 games after Jordan Steger returned from a shoulder injury.
Also returning is 4th year player Bryon Guerin, who has been paired with first year players Kelly Loudoun and John Deal to start the season. “This is a gritty line” commented head coach Chris Green. “They scrap and work hard every shift they are on the ice”
Making an impact early on in the season has been the line of Donald Sund, Dugan Kelly, and Jake Otto. “These three are playing like our top line right now.” says Green. “They are work horses that display great effort, hustle, and dedication.”
Coach Green is pleased with the team's level of play and has high expectations for the season. “This year's team is a month ahead of where we were last season. The rookies have come in willing to please and have played phenomenal hockey.”
