GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport Men's Soccer team returns to action after a week and a half without a game hosting matches against Illinois Tech and Indiana Tech on Tuesday and Saturday night. Women's Soccer and Volleyball each host a match Wednesday night. Men's and Women's tennis will also be in action in the area this week as they play matches at Gainey Athletic Complex on Friday. After their performances last week, Adrian Balbas and Kelse Moon were named Davenport Players of the Week.
Game of the Week: Men's Soccer vs. Indiana Tech
After not playing a game for a week and a half, the Davenport men's soccer team will return to action on Wednesday against Illinois Tech before taking on #RV Indiana Tech in the Panthers WHAC opener on Saturday night. Both games will take place at the DU Turf Field.
After starting the season 1-3, the Panthers have battled back to even their record at 3-3 with a pair of one goal victories over Judson University (Ill.) and Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) at the First-Knox Cougar Invitational hosted by Mount Vernon Nazarene.
Bernard Brnada leads the team with three goals on the season on six shots on goal. Five other Panthers (JC Smith, Stuart Collins, Dino Duratovic, Jai Maw, and Bradley Lediard) have netted goals for Davenport this season.
Kevin O'Brien has been terrific in net for the Panthers having made nine saves with a 1.25 goal against average in four games played. He has a 3-1 record on the season with one shutout.
Davenport won their only other home game this season in a 3-1 decision against Mount Vernon Nazarene.
Indiana Tech comes in with a 4-1 record and is receiving votes in the latest top-25 poll. Indiana Tech has scored just six goals in five games but has allowed only three goals. Aultain Gaye leads Tech with two goals and two assists on the season. Reece Richardson has gotten the start in goal for each of Indiana Tech's first five games and has made 13 saves and has had four shutouts. Tech's lone loss came at Trinity Christian by a score of 0-3.
Davenport Men's Player of the Week: Adrian Balbas, Men's Golf
Adrian Balbas is the Men's Athlete of the Week after helping the Panthers to a first place finish at WHAC Jamboree #2 hosted by Cornerstone and Aquinas. The sophomore from Santander, Spain posted rounds of 76 and 75 to finish third overall in the 42 man field at Quail Ridge and Stonewater CC.
Adrian is averaging 75 so far in 2012 and has the Panthers atop the WHAC standings heading into the third jamboree in just over two weeks. Balbas is the defending WHAC Champion and qualified for the NAIA National Championships last season.
Davenport Women's Player of the Week: Kelse Moon, Volleyball
Kelse is the Women's Athlete of the Week after helping the Panthers to a perfect 3-0 week including a WHAC opening win over Lawrence Tech on Wednesday night. The week also included a sweep of Judson and St. Francis in which the senior outside hitter posted 26 kills and hit at a .489 clip on the day.
For the week, Kelse finished with 34 kills (.436 %) to go along with an average of 8 digs and 2 aces per match to help Davenport improve to 11-3 overall and 1-0 in league play. DU will be in action twice for conference play next week when they host Siena Heights and travel to UM-Dearborn.
