GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After arriving backing into campus from a well-deserved Christmas break, the No. 5 Davenport women's basketball team picked up where they left off. In fact, the Lady Panthers grabbed their record book, turned to the single-game page and started rewriting it.

Kayleigh VanKeulen scored a career-high 16 points, all in the second half, Linnea Brandholm nailed four three-point shots for a season-high 12 and Emily Nielsen and Staci Stadler both added 10 as the Panthers rolled past St. Clair (Canada) 119-35 on the first day of the Davenport Holiday Tournament Friday.

On the evening, the Panthers went on to set new single-game records:

  • Most assists in a game with 36 (previous was 34)
  • Tied record for 3-point field goals made with 17
  • Forced opponents to commit 57 turnovers (previous was 43)

Several Panthers went on to set single-game personal bests:
  • Points scored by VanKeulen (16), Stadler (10), Shaina Johnson (9), Kimberly Weston and Chri Carter (8)
  • Nikki Trammell set a personal best with six rebounds
  • Assists made from Carter (5) and Stadler (4)
  • Steals forced by Karli Harris (9), Nielsen (4) and Trammell (3)

Davenport was also on a roll from beyond the arc, going 17-for-34 for 50 percent, the best percentage on the year. Following Brandholm's four successful 3-pointers were VanKeulen and Alex Law with three.

After the Saints made the first bucket in the game, Kayla Gross' successful 3-pointer ignited the Panthers to a 34-4 lead with 6:13 left in the half. Harris was on a roll in the first half as she stolen eight basketballs to break her career-high of seven. She also led the team with nine points while Gross scored eight.

Davenport went into the locker room with a 55-12 lead, but was shooting 46 percent from the field, 47 from the 3-point line.

While Law and Carter dropped in five points to end the half, the Lady Panthers added on at the start of the second half with a 15-0 run in 2:55. Davenport's bench went on to score 55 points in the second half and finished off the evening with 86.

Before Davenport and St. Clair started their contest, Holy Cross (Ind.) and Marygrove opened the Holiday Tournament with the Saints taking a 64-50 win over the Mustangs. Marygrove and St. Clair will open the second day of the tournament Saturday at 1 p.m. and will be followed by Davenport and Holy Cross.

Post-Game Quotes –

Head coach Mike Williams

On the game: “I think it was consistent. We had everybody play good basketball. It was a great team effort like it has been for the last eight games. Minus the score, I thought we played good basketball.”

On the 3-point shooting performance: “I think when you are winning the game by a large margin, the rim becomes a little bit bigger, but we did spend a lot of time yesterday, and at our shoot-around today, taking shots. We haven't done a lot of shooting in practice so maybe there was a combination of both.”

Sophomore guard Kayleigh VanKeulen

On the overall performance: “It was a relaxed atmosphere. We got to relax and have fun.”

On if the Christmas break helped with the performance: “Oh yeah, it was good mental and physical break. We got to be with our families and rest, and then we came back and had a hard practice and we were ready to go.”

On what Coach Williams said after the game: “He said we played well as a team and we need did everything he asked for, but we got to be prepared mentally for tomorrow.”
