Game of the Week: Volleyball vs. Cornerstone

With just a week left in the Volleyball regular season the top five seeds in the WHAC Standings are still up for grabs as all five teams are separated by one game. No. RV Northwestern Ohio,  No. 16 Madonna, and Indiana Tech sit atop the standings at 8-1 in WHAC play while Davenport and Cornerstone are right behind them with a 7-2 conference record. The top four in the conference will receive a first round bye in the WHAC Tournament.

The standings are sure to change in the finals days with all five teams playing at least one of the other top five teams. Davenport will take on Siena Heights on Wednesday before taking on Cornerstone on Friday. The Golden Eagles will take on Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday before taking on the Panthers. Indiana Tech will face both Madonna and Northwestern Ohio.

The Panthers come into the final week with a 28-5 overall record and are currently riding an 11 game win streak. During the win streak, that included 4-0 weekends at both the Grand View Tournament and the Cornerstone Classic this past weekend, the Panthers have dropped only four games and have won 3-0 in eight of the eleven wins.

Davenport is 3-12 all-time against Cornerstone and are just 1-8 all-time at Cornerstone. Of the last ten matches against Cornerstone, all have gone at least four sets with two having gone to five sets. The Panthers lost both matches to Cornerstone last season after winning both the year before.

Cornerstone comes in with a 22-8 overall record. The Golden Eagles had won four consecutive games before falling to Bethel College in four sets in the final match of the Aquinas/Cornerstone Classic. Kim Weaver leads Cornerstone in assists (1130) and aces (42). Weaver's 1130 assists is good for the 19th most in the NAIA. As a team, Cornerstone ranks 13th in assists per game and 14th in kills per game. Beckey Albrecht leads the team with 529 digs on the season.

Davenport Men's Player of the Week: Tyler Quigley, D1 Hockey

Tyler Quigley is the Davenport Male Athlete of the Week after helping the D1 Hockey team to a 2-1 weekend. Quigley recorded three goals and three assists to lead the Panthers to wins over No. 3 Adrian and No. 5 Oakland.

All three of Quigley's goals occurred at crucial points in the game. At Adrian on Thursday night, Quigley scored the game winner with 59 second remaining in overtime. And then against Oakland on Sunday afternoon, Quigley put the Panthers up 3-1 in the third period with his first goal and then made an empty net goal to seal the 4-2 victory for Davenport in the “Good Luck DUck” series opener.

Davenport Women's Player of the Week: Letesha Cannonier, Women's Soccer

Letesha Cannonier is the Davenport Female Athlete of the Week after she led the Panthers to a 3-0 victory over Cornerstone in their only match of the week. The win enabled the Panthers to clinch the regular season WHAC title outright which is the first time in school history that has happened.

Cannonier, who has accumulated eight goals in the season (all in her last nine games) posted the first two goals of the game on Wednesday to split the season series with the Golden Eagles. Davenport has now won nine straight games overall and will be the #1 seed in the WHAC Tournament which starts on Wednesday.
