GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The D2 rugby team opened the second half with 17 straight points en route to a 29-21 victory over visiting IPFW at the DU Turf Field Saturday. The win lifts the Panthers spring record to 2-0 and 7-3 overall on the season.
Davenport, playing in their first home game of the spring, tallied the first points of the contest, scoring a try 12 minutes into the game for an early 5-0.
However, the Mastodons scored the next eight points on a three-point penalty and a try of their own to take a 8-5 advantage into halftime.
The Panthers came out in the second half strong, scoring 17 straight points for a 22-8 score in the 58th minute. DU notched their 17 points on three tries and a conversion.
A Mastodons' penalty kick ended the Panthers' run at the 73th minute, however, the DU offense a minute later quickly marched the pitch for another try. A successful conversion gave the Panthers a 29-11, their largest advantage of the game.
IPFW scored two late tries once the Panthers put the score out of reach for the final 29-21 score.
The Panthers return to the pitch next Saturday in the Western Michigan Tournament in Kalamazoo.
