JOLIET, Ill. - A strong singles performance from the women's team lifted the Lady Panthers to a 6-3 win over St. Francis on Saturday while the men dropped a heartbreaker 5-4 to the Saints. The two teams will be in action next when men host GVSU on 3/25 and women host Indiana Wesleyan on 4/2.
On the men's side, Davenport struggled with the singles as they dropped four of the six matches. The Panthers picked up wins at #5 when
Eric Pell (Caledonia, Mich.) defeated his opponent 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 and #6 when
Tyler Chambers (Rockford, Mich.) won 6-2, 7-6 (3).
Needing to win all three doubles matches to earn the victory was a daunting task and DU got off to a fast start as the #1 pair of
Victor Roland (Natal, Brazil) and
Jeff Karasinski (Grand Rapids, Mich.) won 8-4. DU also got a win out of the #3 team of Chambers and Pell (8-3) but in the closest match of the day,
Vitaly Schumilov (Togliatti, Russia) and
Matt Weiden (Kentwood, Mich.) dropped an 8-6 heartbreaker.
The women had the opposite story as they started with doubles and got off to a slow start with only one win out of the three matches. Picking up the lone point for DU were
Diana Favela (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) and
Denisse Favela (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) teamed up to win 8-1.
The Favela sisters then started off the singles play with a bang by combining to win both matches while dropping only three sets.
Stephanie Fortney (Allegan, Mich.) won at #3 singles 6-0, 6-1 and
Erin Hossack (Dearborn, Mich.) at #5 with a thrilling three set (6-4, 6-7 (8), 10-4) win.
K
Kristi Kuzdal (Grandville, Mich.), playing at #4 singles picked up the sealer for Davenport as she posted a 6-0, 6-3 win.
The two teams will return to action in the next two weeks when the men host Grand Valley on the 29th and the women host Indiana Wesleyan on April 2.
