After two tough losses to open the 2011 campaign, the DU softball team returned to the diamond on Friday to take on Southern Oregon. After a scoreless first inning, the DU bats again got a strong start when it was their turn in the second.
Liz Veltman (Grand Ledge, Mich.) singled with one out and was brought home on a 2-run homerun from
Katie Cornman (Eastpointe, Mich.) to give Davenport a 2-0 lead. Playing with a lead for the second time in three games did not come easy once again for DU as SOU put together a monster fourth inning by plating seven runners for the commanding lead.
DU allowed six hits and committed one error in the big inning and the offense was unable to come up with big hits down the stretch as they fell 8-2 after Southern Oregon brought home one more in the sixth.
Sam Cole (Belleville, Mich.) took the loss on the mound for DU as they fall to 0-3 on the year. The road does not get any easier for the Panthers as they open the bracket play portion of the tourney with No. 1 ranked and host Cal Baptist on Saturday at 5:00pm EST.
